About

Bowdoin Summer Art Camp is a fully supervised day in the art studio that nurtures creativity, community, and an appreciation for the creative process. No experience or expertise is necessary, just enthusiasm for the process of making art and a willingness to experiment with new ways of expressing creativity. Each session is designed to work as a separate unit, but a child may enroll in more than one session as long as they are the appropriate age at the time the camp starts. Most camp sessions will take place in the Edwards Center for Art and Dance on the Bowdoin College campus. As weather permits, some sessions will take place outdoors on the campus.

Each year we typically organize the sessions into three age groups, 6-7, 8-10, and 11-13. The camp day is from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Each day during your student's week-long session there is a different morning and afternoon session for each age group, with a lunch break in between. The goal is to provide a robust art experience with deep engagement and a sense of joy and belonging.

2024 sessions will take place during the last week of June and the last full 3 weeks of July.
  • June 24-28
  • July 8 - 12
  • July 15 - 19
  • July 22-26

About Our 2023 Instructors and Assistants

Audrey Parker

My name is Audrey and I am an art teacher who loves to teach paper craft and painting. My artistic practice revolves around creating realistic paper flowers, as well as watercolor paintings with elements of paper sculpture, focusing primarily on nature and our connection to it. I graduated from MECA in 2021 with my Masters in Art Education as well as in 2019 with a B.F.A. in Painting and a minor in Art History. Growing up in rural Maine, I have a deep connection to the natural landscape around us, and spend most of my free time outside, doing nature walks and river floats, collecting imagery. Outside of school and my practice, my main interests are fiber arts, baking and reading.

Beatrice Dahlen

Art has been my favorite subject at school for as long as I can remember! In my life, creativity takes many forms: drawing, painting, printmaking, sewing, knitting, dyeing, photography, fiber arts, making music, and gardening are a few of them! My love of art brought me to Massachusetts College of Art and Design where I received a BFA. While there I studied photography, printmaking, fibers and sculpture. I also studied Integrated Learning at Antioch New England where I received a M.Ed. For over two decades now my teaching has spanned children to adults, art to farming, workshops to the public school classroom. I love to spend time at home knitting, cooking and gardening or on adventures with my own children. During the school year you can find me at Kate Furbish Elementary School where I teach Pre Kindergarten. I am looking forward to joining the artists at Bowdoin Art Camp this year and am looking forward to diving into our imaginations!

Emily Trenholm

I'm looking forward to sharing my love of weaving with your children this summer! My studio practice is rooted in the study of nature, color and form and I spend many days outside working from observation. During the school year, I am an Adjunct Professor of Drawing and Painting at the University of New Hampshire. I love to ski, bike and boat with my family and am happy to call Brunswick my home.

Jessica Ping DePaiva

In our household each day is filled with a bit of creativity and structure. I have a four year old who loves to help me with projects. Sometimes it's painting a wall a new color, other times is reupholstering an old chair or even turning well loved sheets into a dog bed. We enjoy recycling, recreating, and reimagining old and loved items into new art and useful decor. You can find scraps of fabric & ribbons, driftwood & seashells, and all kinds of odds & ends, just waiting to be transformed! I have worked with students domestically and abroad from elementary to higher ed. I have also worked in art and architecture in New York and studied art at Wheaton College (MA) and in Florence, Italy. I have a great appreciation for diversity and drawing from culture and the environment around you.

Sophia Kovacs

Hi! I am very excited to be returning to Art Camp for my second summer. I’m currently a senior at Morse High School in Bath, Maine. After graduating from high school this spring, I am planning to attend Middlebury College in Vermont. In my free time, I enjoy being outside (especially by the ocean), reading, playing bass, making collages, and painting.

Monique Boutin

Sharing in the learning process and finding connections between land, history, art and communities, especially through making art, inspires me. I am a place-based artist and educator based in midcoast Maine who has been grateful to work with young people through hands-on learning and maker spaces in art and natural history museums, teaching at universities, schools, and outdoor education organizations, and coaching young runners in cross country. My background in art includes drawing, painting, photography, video, sculpture, and installation; I enjoy tracing histories of places and materials through research, running, making maps and collaborative artchives. I received my MFA in Visual Arts and MA in Art History from Purchase College, State University of New York, and currently live in Wiscasset. I hope to meet you this summer at camp!

Josie Colt

Hello! I'm Josie, a Portland-based artist with practice working in a variety of creative mediums. I particularly love art forms that allow me to tell a story. My favorite story-telling mediums include comics, animation, puppetry, and crankies. I also love to paint and draw, and find it to be a very therapeutic activity. In the summer I run a pop-up called Portraits As You Pass, drawing live portraits of people in the style of blind contour, a technique that exercises the right (creative) side of the brain. I believe anyone can make art and reap the benefits of art-making. It's about the process, not the product! Sharing my practice and love for art with others is very rewarding, and I always learn so much from my experiences teaching. It is a joy to work with kids and learn from their open and imaginative lenses. I am returning to teach camp for my second summer at Bowdoin, and am so excited for what we have in store.

Rachel Burns

I am a rising senior at Barnard College in New York City, though I am originally from Brunswick, Maine. I am studying political science and women’s studies, am passionate about social justice work, and am creative in all the other time I have! I have my own sustainable clothing business and am experienced in sewing and crocheting, although I have experience in many artistic subjects. I also enjoy cooking, baking, and spending time in nature. I attended Bowdoin Summer Art Camp as a child, and I really look forward to working here this summer!

Ted de Mille and Susan Pelis

Hi, I’m Ted DeMille, a teacher, writer, musician, artist, and eighteen-year veteran of Art Camp. For forty years I’ve woven music, collage, painting, and drama into the curriculum of his elementary school classes in Massachusetts, Cape Elizabeth, The Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb, Maine, and most recently at 317 Maine Community Music. In 2007, I published the critically praised book Making Believe on Paper for Heinemann Press about how to teach young children to write quality fiction literature. As a musician I have performed all over New England as a member of various roots music bands, and as a solo artist. I’ve also recorded several compact discs and written over one hundred songs for kids and grown-ups. Currently at 317 I teach Family Classes, ukulele, and guitar to musicians aged one to eighty-one. I’ll be joined by Susan Pelis, an experienced teacher and collagist who has collaborated with me at Art Camp for over fifteen years. Susan Pelis is a talented teacher and artist in Western Massachusetts. We can’t wait to meet you and your emerging artists!

Yasamin Holland

Teaching art is a joy. I taught pre-school through high school visual art and arts integration in public, private, and charter school settings. I worked in the education and development departments at the Denver Art Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I’ve worked as a freelance fashion stylist, designed children’s clothing, homeware, and co-produced a short film featured in Barcelona Arte Contemporaneo’s exhibition La Piel. When not teaching art or parenting my two young children, I enjoy making sustainable embroidery, collage, and personal styling. I am interested in creating optimal conditions for learning, which includes an abundance of choice, positive support, community building, and an emphasis on the creative process. I have a longstanding passion for broadening young people’s perceptions of what art is and can be, what creativity is and can be. I have an MA in Educational Psychology from the University of Colorado, Denver and sixteen years of classroom teaching experience. During the school year I am the art teacher at Chewonki’s Maine Coast Semester School. It is a pleasure to return as the director of the Bowdoin Summer Art Camp, along with a fabulous team of educators. I look forward to connecting with you this summer!
